Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Season 8, Episode 1 (Free Falling; She’s Gone)
The anticipated season premiere of ABC’s hit show,Grey’s Anatomyhas come and gone, and although it was a phenomenal episode I can’t help but say ‘WTF’?
Every dedicated fan ofGrey’s will agree with me when I say that Shonda Rhimes has a tendency to over-do it when it comes to premieres and/or finales…well, she didn’t disappoint this time. The show starts with a bang, following a married couple fighting, who soon fall into a massive sinkhole the size of Texas. Lots of other people fall victim to this Hellmouth like hole (nerdy Buffy reference, I apologize) but we seem to only care about these two who become more prevalent as the episode progresses.
On the home front, Meredith and Cristina are living together, and seem to be in some sort of routine with Zola… gay much? Little Grey (Lexie) and Avery (Jackson) lackluster in the bedroom department because of Meredith’s new addition and McSteamy (Mark Sloan) is probing Avery in the hospital for info. on Lexie… please just get back together already!
In other news, Derek is still pissed Meredith switched the medicine in the clinical trial and the Chief (Richard) is forced by the board to fire good ole Mer. I find it hilarious that the Chief fired Meredith yet does everything in his power to find her another job.
Meredith sticks around the hospital, even after being fired – like that would happen in real life – and she admits to Cristina that maybe instead of fighting for her job back she will just be a really good mother… sorry Mer, but we know that’s not gonna happen.
Callie and Arizona are looking good, all mommy love and all with their new baby. Callie seems to be annoyed with motherhood, when Arizona is embracing it… major role reversal much? Ruh roh—I smell trouble for the future of Calzona. Crap!
Danny and Susannah, the couple who fell in the sinkhole are aided by Callie and Hunt (Owen) on scene, but since the sinkhole is too unstable both doctors must talk Danny through amputating his wife’s leg in order to free her from under the car. If he doesn’t do this, she will die—can you say pressure!?
Everyone, except for Arizona, hates Karev (Alex) so he relocates himself to where the sinkhole is… where luckily he finds a child under the dirt and rubble. Good job Karev, you actually did something right! Nark!
Bailey (Miranda) is hostile towards the Chief who wants her to write a recommendation for rule-breaking Dr. Grey… and refuses to help Meredith taint another hospital’s name.
Teddy is in La La Land, because she got laid and is happy in love with Hottie McSickpants (Henry) and agrees to take Cristina back under her wing despite last season’s quarrels.
Kepner (April) is sucking bad at her new role as Chief resident… no one is listening to what she says, or updating the hospital board…which leaves Little Grey and Bailey in an O.R. about to cut open the WRONG patient. Major fail Kepner, major fail. Luckily they noticed it before it was too late.
Janet is finishing up her home study of Mer-Der and catches a slip up of “isn’t it Dr. Sheppard’s night tonight…” while Meredith is visiting Zola in the hospital day care. Whoops! Mer lies, badly, and later “kidnaps” Zola for about 4 hours.
All doctors return to the hospital and aid their patients from the sinkhole massacre. None of them are getting along under Kepner’s reign so Bailey asks the Chief if they can do a Gunther…which, we find out later is supposed to help bring the doctors back together. Susannah, recent amputee and survivor of the sinkhole is dubbed the perfect Gunther specimen. Nothing like using someone on their deathbed to bring people together…
Meanwhile, we find out that Cristina did not get the abortion and is still with child. Meredith sternly explains to Hunt that a baby will kill her because she doesn’t want to be a mother and will resent the kid, yada yada yada. She goes into her own past and how her mom didn’t want her, yada yada yada Mer get over it yada yada.
Surprisingly, Avery comes out the Gunther winner, by taking charge of the situation after Cristina sticks Karev with a substance that knocks him out in the O.R.
Janet takes Zola away from Meredith and Derek, the Chief tells the board that he is the one who switched the medicine in the clinical trial and that Meredith was just covering for him, Cristina and Hunt go together to get the abortion, and the chief gives Bailey the research he has been working on. Deep breath.
All in all, it was a very eventful episode in which I found myself screaming, huffing, cheering, and ‘ooohh-ing’ at the television the entire two hours. Let’s see what next week’s episode has in store for us.
