Modern landscape designers often offer customers the idea of vertical gardening sites. That's very beautiful! From our article you will learn how to do vertical gardening in the garden with your own hands. Why resort to the help of specialists, if you can make the necessary constructions yourself?
It should be noted that vertical gardening for the garden is not only aesthetics. Plants it will bring tangible benefits. You will spend much less time on watering and caring for them due to the convenience of the design. By the way, it is made from the simplest materials that are often at hand at each cottage.
We will make vertical modules for vegetables and greens that will decorate your summer cottage. If you wish, you can slightly change the design and grow flowers in it. Such a vertical flowerbed is located on the sunny side of the house and is installed on any surface (soft soil and grass, gravel and asphalt, wood and concrete).
We recommend to see: flower beds and flower beds with their own hands
What do we need?
- wooden beams of the desired size
- a circular saw
- drill with a three-millimeter drill
- furniture stapler
- wire mesh
- wire cutters
The choice of wood should be approached responsibly. Choose breeds that do not rot. These include all coniferous and some deciduous trees. From the use of plywood and chipboard for the manufacture of such a design refuse immediately - when they come into contact with moisture, they will sodden and poison the soil, which means that your plants will invariably die.
How to do vertical gardening?
So, take any tree. If the breed is unreliable, it can be soaked with anti-fungal agent or varnished. The latter option is preferable, as a special varnish for wood protects the material from any damage. The design can be treated with a double layer. You can do this before starting work to save time: it is easier to paint the bars than a complex vertical stand.
Measure and saw off the wooden bars. Think about what height the vertical garden will be - in accordance with this, determine the height of the long beams.Estimate the width and height of the boxes. Depending on this, measure the size of the transverse bars and make several blanks of the same size.
Please note that the boxes-modules for vertical gardening should be quite high. This is necessary to accommodate quality drainage - we must ensure that the roots have access to the air so that they feel comfortable.
We assemble the box with a drill and screws. For reliability, fasten two pieces to each side of the beam. Between the bars themselves, we will definitely leave a small distance.
After that, measure the wire mesh, its size should correspond to the parameters of the bottom of the boxes. With the help of pliers, we cut off the required amount of material, and then do a few of the same size blanks.
We fasten this grid to the bottom of each drawer using a furniture stapler. If you do not have such a stapler, just hammer in small nails and turn them in with a hook, and then hammer them into the wood with a hammer.
Then you should attach geotextiles to the modules. This is a special fabric that can be found in any department of dacha materials. It is necessary to ensure drainage and protect our plantings from weeds. We need to measure the amount of fabric that can be upholstered from the inside of the box. Attach it to the stapler (can be on small nails). We fix it as reliably as possible and try to avoid gaps.
We proceed to the final stage of creating vertical gardening for the garden. We need to put two boxes on the ground - between them we leave a distance equal in size to another box. We place modules in staggered order.
We assemble the design to the desired size and number of cells. We will fasten it on nails or screws - it depends on the wall on which you plan to put vertical gardening.
Done! It remains only to fill our boxes with soil and plant flowers or vegetables in it.
Vertical gardening will allow you to create an additional shade for planting (due to its special design), facilitate irrigation due to drainage (water from the top will fall to the lower “neighbors” - take this into account when planting), protect the crop from various diseases and help fruits and flowers to form correctly.
