What’s in a Name? Lady Gaga Announces Release of New Album ‘Joanne’
Six-time Grammy Award winner will release her much anticipated fifth studio album,Joanne, via Streamline/Interscope onFriday, October 21.
The first single, “,” was co-produced with “Uptown Funk” mastermind Mark Ronson and recently debuted at #1 on iTunes in 60 countries. Just a week after its release, “Perfect Illusion” has soared on radio, becoming the #1 most added song on Pop with 170 adds and the #1 most added song on Hot AC with 75 adds.
USA Today reports in their story “Everything we know about Lady Gaga’s new album ‘Joanne’” that the album is actually named after her father’s late sister by the same name. Joanne is also Lady Gaga’s middle name.
“As I returned to my home life and spending time with my friends and family and getting out of the mainstream limelight for a minute, the experiences of our family and our challenges that make us who we are. It’s everything about Joanne…it’s all the toughness of the pain of losing her that made us all strong and made us who we are. She is the woman of my past who is becoming and helping me bring more of my honest woman self into the future,” Lady Gaga told Zane Lowe on Beats 1. Listen to the exclusive interview here.
Lady Gaga also revealed that her aunt Joanne’s handwriting is featured on the album’s back cover, with its packaging containing family mementos.
The new music will hit airwaves just before Halloween.
“The day the album comes out will be such a day of healing for me and my family, and my father,” she said.
Lady Gaga says of one of the new songs, “John Wayne,” that it’s about her “incessant need to run after wild men and somehow I get bored of the same old John.”
There’s even a Country feel to the album with contributions from Nashville singer/songwriter Hillary Lindsey of “Girl Crush” and “Jesus Take the Wheel” fame.
Throughout her career, Lady Gaga has amassed an outstanding 30 million global album sales and 150 million single sales. Her last solo album wasArtpop(2013), followed by a 2014 duet album with Tony Bennett,Cheek to Cheek. She took a slight break from music to focus on her acting career, which garnered her a Golden Globe Award for her participation in American Horror Story.
